Handanović retired from professional football after the 2020—21 season. Handanović was one of three Slovenian goalkeepers chosen to go to the , but did not feature in any matches. Handanovic confirmed his reputation as an expert penalty-saver, keeping all but one of the eight he faced out of the Nerazzurri net between 2014 and 2015, a statistic that places him second in the all-time rankings only behind Gianluca Pagliuca.
